Dumb Ways to Die

(This video might be not recommended for kids)

Set fire to your hair
Poke a stick at a grizzly bear
Eat medicine that’s out of date
Use your private parts as piranha bait

Dumb ways to die, so many dumb ways to die (bis)

Get your toast out with a fork
Do your own electrical work
Teach yourself how to fly
Eat a two week old unrefrigerated pie

Dumb ways to die, so many dumb ways to die (bis)

Invite a psycho-killer inside
Scratch your drug dealer’s brand new ride
Take your helmet off in outer space
Use your clothes dryer as a hiding place

Dumb ways to die, so many dumb ways to die (bis)

Keep a rattlesnake as pet
Sell both your kidneys on the internet
Eat a tube of superglue
“I wonder what’s this red button do?”

Dumb ways to die, so many dumb ways to die (bis)

Dress up like a moose during hunting season…
Disturb a nest of wasps for no good reason…

Stand on the edge of a train station platform
Drive around the boom gates at a level crossing
Run across the tracks between the platforms

They may not rhyme but they’re quite possibly

Dumbest ways to die
Dumbest ways to die
Dumbest ways to die

So many dumb
So many dumb ways to die

Be safe around trains. A message from Metro

I can´t avoid sharing this video from the Australian Metro Campaign. It aims to point out how some silly behaviours can cause serious injuries to ourselves (and others), specially around trains. They are quite obvious but still, we keep receiving news about these things happening every now and then.

Anyhow, this is not what I´m interested about in this song.

Apart from the music and the voice of the artist -which I enjoyed-, and the wonderful piece of marketing that it is, what really stroke me was that there are actually so many dumb ways to die. Don´t get me wrong; I´m not trying to be gloomy, but just the opposite. Let me explain myself;

We are lucky. We work hard, we have family and friends, projects, maybe faith…  we somehow get on with life.

However, from time to time, we get stuck. Maybe problems with our boss, maybe concerns about one of our kids, perhaps a cut of salary, sometimes an argument with a friend or the serious illness of a relative, not finding a fulfilling job, __________, ___________, _________, (fill in the gaps), etc.

This get’s us suffering (more or less depending on your character).

Up to here everything normal as those are important issues. The problem arrives when we keep that sorrow. When, instead of facing what happens, we embrace the suffering as a longride partner. When we can’t get out of the spiral of sadness caused by a circumstance that, either we can’t change only by ourselves, or that sooner or later, would fade.

This sorrow prevents us from being joyful, it gets us living life at a slow speed, frustrated, anxious… and in the long term can end up making us forget how lucky we are. And that is what I consider another way to die.

A metaphorical way to die, but a dumb way to die, anyway.
